The son of friends needed an inexpensive way to get his mobility device in & out of his vehicle. The quotes they had gotten for such a lift were substantial- at least $1,500. I was able to come up with a solution that cost less than $200.
The base platform was a half sheet of 23/32 in plywood (~$18) cut the same size as the rear cargo (floor) liner.
From Harbor Freight I used the following:
1 x 1/2 Ton Capacity Pickup Truck Crane (Stock # 60732) – Sale price – $90
1 x 2500 lb. ATV/Utility Electric Winch w/ Wireless Remote Control – Sale price $50
1 x 4000 lb. Capacity Lifting Block – Sale price $7
1 x Cabela’s Heavy Duty Cargo Net (IK-525911) – $20
I bolted on a 6-inch Steel Mending Brace to the winch base and used two square U-bolts to mount the winch to the boom. A hose clamp in front of the upper most U-bolt was needed to prevent the winch from sliding forward. A bester solution would be to weld the winch base to the boom, something I could not do.
I took the lifting hook off the Lifting Block and ground ~1/8 off the block sides (straps) so it would fit inside the elongated opening at the end of the boom. To secure the Lifting Block, I utilized the large lock pin (normally used to secure the crane post to the crane base) not used.
The final problem that needed to be solved was the car power outlet in the cargo area was supplied with a 15A fuse that proved to be not sufficient to power the winch. A dedicated 12-volt power source ultimately had to be wired to the winch.
