I added a tongsheng TSDZ2 500w 48v mid-drive motor for my first ebike conversion. The work should be challenging, but do-able, for anyone who is handy. The most challenging parts for me were removing the crankshaft (Even with a crankshaft remover) and removing/replacing the handlebars & shifters. Connecting the motor parts and batter were super simple, though I did have to buy special wire connectors. I just wasn’t comfortable splicing the wires together since they will be pushing so much power at full draw.
The bike carries me to and from work, about 25 miles, at a speed of 24 mph on the flats. It still struggles a bit with some of the largest San Francisco hills. But these hills are beasts that I could never hope to climb without the support of a motor. The motor and battery add around 20 lbs to the bike.
This was my first ebike build. I originally got into ebikes with through this indigogo product: The world’s most affordable & lightest E-Bike!. However, this bike was a piece of junk, and the promised 36v 10AH battery was really a 24v 6AH battery.

TSDZ2 Tongsheng mid-drive 500w motor – $280 + $40

I originally tried to put the motor on my Gravity Avenue ($269 from bikesdirect.com) but the bike had an imperfection within the crank shaft and the motor would not fit. I had to put everything back together on the Gravity Avenue. And removing the crankshaft was a huge pain in the ass even with a proper crank remover.
Next I tried my Giant Escape 2 and the motor fit perfectly. I added the 48v 10ah Samsung battery pretty easily. I still need to secure the battery wires. The motor is near silent and has plenty of power to boost me to 20 mph. The bike is still light enough to carry with me on Caltrain.
