The 2016 Maruti Alto 800 facelift gets several interesting features upgrades like remote keyless entry, smart storage spaces like rear bottle holder and co-driver side map pocket. Power continues to come from the same 0.8-litre three-cylinder petrol engine tuned to produce 47bhp at 6000rpm and 69Nm of torque available at 3500rpm. The motor is paired to a 5-speed gearbox.
Tata Nano GenX manual variant is capable of returning ARAI rated fuel efficiency of 25.3 kms in a litre which is considerably more than the 21.9 kmpl offered by the automated manual transmission version.
Performance & Handling: Tata Nano top speed is around 105 kmph, which is not very impressive as compared to the rivals. Handling is much better in the manual variant, the AMT gearbox is not as effortless to driver as the manual tranny, however things get better when you switch to the sports mode.
Datsun Redi-GO 2016 launched in India at a starting price of Rs. 2.38 lakh, making it a part of the entry-level hatchback segment and one of the most affordable cars in India. There are total five Datsun Redi-GO variants and the Datsun Redi-GO price in India tops at Rs. 3.34 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom, New Delhi.) Under the hood, the ‘urban crossover’ has only one option, which is an 800 cc engine that uses the iSAT technology.
Datsun redi-GO Overview
The platform of the new Datsun Redi-GO is same as the Kwid but the latter is slightly longer. The Redi-GO has a length of 3,429 mm, width of 1,560 mm and a height of 1,541 mm. The ground clearance of the small hatch is the best in class at 185 mm. The car is in direct competition with Maruti Suzuki Alto 800, Hyundai Eon, Renault Kwid, etc. Therefore, it isn’t going to be easy, but will Datsun Redi-GO make it? Time will tell…
The Maruti Suzuki Omni is one of the most popular vehicles in India due to the fact that it has been around since the mid 1980s and also due to the fact that it can be used in a variety of situations. The Omni has been used as a delivery vehicle, a people mover and an ambulance amongst others. That said, Maruti has not really updated the Omni for a long long time now considering the fact that this practical vehicle continues to sell in good numbers due to its price point and due to the fact that its practicality trumps styling and driving ergonomics.
The Omni is a Van, essentially a mono-box design that really has no real design elements that one can write home about. The flat panels on the side and front essentially mean that the Omni can be used to carry around large items with relative ease. The build quality, even on the newer cars is quite terrible, both on the outside and on the insides. On the interior front, the plastics are cheap and rudimentary with a barebones interior and no real creature comfort. The interior space is quite good but the seating comfort in general is quite bad which is mainly due to the fact that there is inadequate padding on the seats. The sliding doors, one of the most iconic features of the Omni do offer good access to the seats.
In terms of technical specifications, the Omni sports an 800cc 3-cylinder engine that traces its roots to the original Maruti 800. The engine makes a modest 35PS of peak power and drives the rear wheels. The engine is mated to a four speed gearbox and gives mileage of 14.7kmpl. The Omni is dangerously under-tyred and showcases poor handling. The Omni also has no safety equipment and is generally best kept as a inner city Taxi or a cargo vehicle
Kwid comes from the Indian R&D team’s contribution and herein comes the high levels of research into weight savings and efficiency. The Kwid sure is a global product but India is its most important market, which is why it goes on sale here first. Renault says that pricing was so important that there was no alternative to localizing the entire car, and the French carmaker has come close. 98 percent of the Kwid’s parts are sourced in India.
Coming to the weight savings, during engine development, which is an all new 3 cylinder 799cc motor, the cylinder block was chosen to be made of aluminium, like most small lightweight engines are. Things like the intake manifold and oil pan are made of durable plastic and the crankshaft is made of steel. This 3-pot mill develops 54PS of power at a fairly decent 5,678rpm and max torque is rated at 72Nm at 4,386rpm. Since the car weighs just 660kg, it gets an impressive power to weight ratio of 85PS per tonne.
