  • First ever test runs of this machine filmed after a street carnival in Oxford, 4th July 2010.
    Built by J Dingley from remains of the original one wheeled skateboard.
    Uses solid state gyroscope + accelerometer in a “complimentary filter” to stay balanced in fore-aft direction. Lateral stability is by having a wide tyre from a go-kart. Turn by leaning to one side using the footpegs + handlebars to (try) to control the turn. At the moment an airborne skateboard wheel each side stops you tilting over more than about 45 degrees.
    Inspired by one of the Dean Kamen original drawings and a more recent CAD design study called the ORBIS. The question was whether such a concept could actually work and be controllable. The answer is yes, at least if you use a wide tyre!
    Really good fun to ride. Very wobbly at first but you soon improve.
